Call me Crazy in 2010

Happy 2010 everyone!

Let’s start a new year shall we?

I’ll kick things off with a story. Not too long ago I was generously given a sum of money, and combined with some freshly acquired Christmas money, I had just enough cash to buy something I’ve wanted for a long time. Drum roll please…. AN IPHONE. Ever since this thing came out I’ve caught myself several times drooling during commercials as I was captivated by it’s sheer coolness. Let’s just say I wanted one REALLY bad. All the stars had aligned in this single moment, and as I held that crisp cash in my hand, I could make it all happen! But as I looked upon the thing that had arrested my attention for so long, it looked very different. No longer was it a shiny gadget with a million apps and the ability to make a grown man drool. No, I saw it for what it is. “It’s just a pile of plastic,” God whispered in my ear. You see, lately God has been rearranging some things in my life and has redirected many of my desires – I really did not desire an iphone. So I didn’t buy it. Call me crazy.

Now I have nothing against apple, iphones, or anyone who owns an iphone. But there is a point I’m trying to make. I want you to be aware of something.

For $300 a year (roughly the cost of that precious iphone) you can sponsor a starving child in Uganda who will receive 2 hot meals a day, get funding to go to school, and be given minor medical care. For an ENTIRE YEAR! 300 Dollars! That’s it!!! (Amazima Ministries International) Oh, and the children are also fed spiritually every week through a bible study. How cool is that? That’s $300 worth spending! How could we not invest in that? How on earth could we not invest in heaven’s cause? A beating heart that Jesus loves and died for. Call me crazy. Another great organization doing similar work is Compassion International. They have a bigger global footprint and are able to reach out to a larger number of children around the world, and do a fantastic job. My roommate Tim recently sponsored a child in Indonesia through Compassion, and I can see his world being flipped upside down as He’s allowing God to rearrange things in his life and redirect his finances.

And You can do the same!

All you need to do is reconsider what you’re investing in. And I’m not talking about mutual funds. I’m talking about things that will outlast time itself. In Matthew 6:19-20 Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy…But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy.” It might just be me, but I think God is pretty clear about how He wants us to use our money. After all, it’s not really OUR money. Furthermore, In John 14:12 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth (this means PAY ATTENTION!), anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” It’s no coincidence that while God was among us He made it His business to care for the needy, heal the sick, restore the broken, and free the oppressed.  If we have FAITH in Him, we will ACT like Him. I think God wants us to do just as He did. Call me crazy.

So in this new year, let God rearrange some things in your life. Let Him redirect some of your finances toward things that are close to HIS heart. All it takes is a simple act of obedience. Take that first step and you will see just how far God can carry you. You will never regret it.
